Medical coding and billing courses will address the rising global demand for more workers in the healthcare industry.
Notably, the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) has licensed TeleDevelopment Services (TDS) to offer medical coding and billing courses.
In particular, medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnoses, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes.
Therefore, these certifications demonstrate the medical coder’s superb expertise in their respective specialties and disciplines, TeleDevelopment said.
AAPC has provided education and professional certification to physician-based coders, with specialty coding credentials in 20 fields of expertise.
TeleDevelopment has worked with both the private sector and the government to develop medical coding training in the Philippines.
These partners include the Healthcare Information Management of the Philippines (HIMAP) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
For its part, AAPC has almost 143,000 global members, of which 99,000 are certified. It has 440 local chapters across the United States plus one in the Philippines.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said medical coding is one of the fastest growing professions in the nation.
According to BLS data, employment of billing and posting clerks will grow 18% in the decade leading up to 2022.
It said job growth is particularly strong in medical billing, with increased demand for healthcare services requiring more workers.
Most noteworthy, certified medical coders typically earn 20 percent more than non-certified coders.
During the training, course participants will learn the history and evolution of physician-based medical coding.
Also, they will be able to discuss the roles, functions and various career paths of a physician-based medical coder.
In addition, they learn the anatomic and physiological principles of medical coding and the necessary medical terminologies to correctly code the diagnoses and procedures, most common in outpatient physician office settings.
Moreover, participants learn to read medical charts, identify essential and relevant data, and assign corrective diagnosis, procedure, and supply codes.
Finally, they learn medical coding guidelines and regulations, including compliance and reimbursement processes.
Hence, this is to better handle issues such as medical necessity, claims denials, bundling, and fraud and abuse cases.
